Native Plant Internship - 2012
New England Wild Flower Society offers internships and fellowships in horticulture and conservation. Applications for 2012 are due in February, 2012.
Founded in 1900, New England Wild Flower Society is a leader in regional plant conservation programs and native plant studies and the oldest native plant conservation organization in the country. Garden in the Woods is the Society's 45-acre botanic garden, containing the largest landscaped collection of native plants in the Northeast (over 1,000 taxa). The Society owns and operates Nasami Farm in Whately, MA, where native plants are propagated and sold. The Society also owns and manages ten sanctuary properties throughout New England and leads conservation initiatives and projects in every county in every state in the region. The Society has provided internships for several decades, offering interns and fellows experiences in native plant cultivation, nursery production, plant/land conservation, and educational programming.
Description
New England Wild Flower Society seeks one intern for the native plant, retail nursery sales area at Garden in the Woods. This unique opportunity will provide a venue for native plant studies, coupled with hands-on experience in a retail nursery. The candidate will assist in many operations including plant care, maintaining product lines, assisting with and managing deliveries, and providing public information through excellent customer service. This position will also involve opportunities to learn horticultural maintenance of on-site stock beds, assisting Garden Shop/Visitors Services staff, planning and leading projects, writing articles, and managing volunteers. This intern will be given the chance to learn about native plant propagation, participate in educational classes and courses, attend field trips, and network with professionals. This is a great opportunity for individuals looking to manage retail nursery operations, become a production grower, and get practical gardening experience.
Skills
Candidates should possess excellent communication skills and have a strong desire to learn. Some botanical understanding and a basic familiarity with horticultural practices would be helpful.
Details
Internship: full-time, six-month position
Starting date: mid March – early April
Stipend: $240.00/week. NO housing is provided. Interns are covered by Worker’s Compensation, but the Society does not provide health insurance, vacation, or sick-time benefits.
The work schedule will rotate with some weekend and holiday hours to be expected.
