Intro to Willow ID

Willows present a challenge for identification. Variation within each species is so high that often plants belonging to different species from the first glance resemble each other even more than those of the same species. However, some characters remain constant and reliable, and with practice willows become more understandable. Learn tips for identification, using mostly common native and non-native species from Massachusetts as examples. Make use of herbarium specimens, dissecting microscopes, and live material. Bring own lens, lunch, and boots for the field session to site that could be flooded.
