Unraveling Dryopteris: The Wood Ferns Workshop

Wood ferns and their hybrids are a somewhat difficult group of ferns to learn.  In this workshop, participants will learn how to distinguish the nine species of wood ferns that are native to New England, and understand their tendency to hybridize.  We will see and identify seven species and several hybrids in the field.  The Society’s Hobbs Fern Sanctuary offers an unusually rich environment and biodiversity of ferns and fern allies, so in addition to Dryopteris, we’ll explore a limey talus slope covered with maidenhair, bulblet, and silvery glade ferns and several rare species.
