Lichens on Bark and Weathered Logs
This introduction to the common bark-colonizing lichen species will familiarize participants with the leafy, bushy, pendent and encrusting lichen genera growing on tree trunks, stumps and weathered logs in New England. We’ll examine lichen collections using stereomicroscopes and practice chemical spot tests for species confirmation. The Simplified Field Key to Maine Macrolichens by Patricia and Jim Hinds and other texts will be used to identify 15-20 lichen species. Bring a 10x hand lens and a bag lunch for the field trip.
