The Albany Pine bush is a 2000+ acre preserve dedicated to the protection of extensive pitch pine woodland on rolling island dunes. Well-known as habitat for the rare Karner blue butterfly, this fire-driven community features scrub and dwarf chinkapin oaks, many heaths, upland willow, pinweeds, and sandplain grasses including little bluestem and Indian grass. We will seek out a variety of spring-blooming species such as wild lupine, wood lily, New Jersey tea, goat’s-rue, and rue anemone, and discuss the use of fire as a management tool to preserve this unusual community.
