This moderate hike leads us through a variety of
forest types before emerging into the alpine zone on the saddle between Mount Franklin
and Mount Eisenhower after 2.9 miles. The trail is
one of the best ascents in the White Mountains
and the trail is well designed and maintained. It is an historic trail that
dates back over 150 years. Upon reaching alpine zone, a variety of options are
available. The true summit of Eisenhower is .7 miles further and provides
panoramic views in all directions. The saddle between Franklin and Eisenhower
has a wonderful array of alpine flora, a small alpine lake, and Red Pond is
nearby. Numerous rare flowers will be observed and although the timing is past
peak bloom, a variety of early spring and early summer species should be in
bloom. Come prepared for varying weather conditions, dress in layers, and wear
sturdy hiking boots.
