The southern end of Mt. Tom is a steep, rocky outcrop of basalt, with other interesting rock formations from the old Lake Hitchcock era. The M & M Trail to the top differs from last year’s field trip, due to changing habitats resulting from the mountain’s varied geology. Look for Desmodium, Lespedeza, Helianthus sp., Hepatica americana, Arabidopsis sp, Aureolaria flava, Asclepias quadrifolia, Ceanothus americanus, and Arctostaphylos uva-ursi among many other dry, acidic plants associated with these dry basalt ridges and woods. This informal exploration of plants around this site also provides wonderful views of the valley from the summit. Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring a bag lunch, water, hand lens, field guides and bug repellant. Moderately strenuous to strenuous especially near the summit, with some very steep sections.
