The Hobbs Fern Sanctuary is a northern botanical wonder. Given to the Society by Christina and Sturtevant Hobbs, it is 248 acres of spruce/fir forests, northern hardwood forests, a bog and associated wetlands, and a calcareous ledge community. The ledge's limey talus slope is covered with maidenhair, bulblet, and silvery glade ferns and is home to several rare species. There is a Dryopteris swamp with a dozen wood fern species and hybrids. We will see almost 3 dozen pteridophyte taxa altogether. There is no trail system at this property, so please come prepared for off-trail walking on sometimes steep and uneven terrain.
