Flora and Plant Communities of Eshqua Bog

Eshqua Bog

Best known for its spectacular showy lady’s slipper orchid display, at its peak during our visit, Eshqua Bog has a remarkable diversity of plants in its upland and wetland habitats. This walk through forest and fen along the preserve’s trails introduces diverse plant communities and flora in addition to its famous orchids. We look at several invasive species which threaten the fen community, and discuss control efforts. As part of a long-term research project on changes in the preserve’s flora, in the afternoon we will practice our identification skills with an inventory of the plants in a “study area” portion of the fen. Wear water resistant footgear, bring lunch, and any field guides you have.
