New England Wild Flower Society's Flora Novae Angliae:  A Manual for the Identification of Native and Naturalized Higher Vascular Plants in New England will be published in the late spring of 2011 and this is your opportunity to study in the field with the author. We visit a riparian forest along the Androscoggin River, one of Maine's largest rivers that begins in Western Maine and travels 287 kilometers before joining the Kennebec River at Merrymeeting Bay. A large diversity of flowering plants occurs along the river, including some noteworthy species. We focus on using the newly published manual to learn its structure, terminology, and the author's methods for identifying plants. Plan for uneven (but not rough) ground, weather, and potentially some biting insects. Bring a bag lunch, hand lens, metric ruler, and a copy of the Flora, available at the Garden Shop at Garden in the Woods or online at Amazon.com.
