Huntington Ravine is one of the great gulfs on the eastern slope of Mount Washington. The massive headwalls are cut with numerous small (and not so small) gullies. The most striking and botanically diverse of these are located on either side of a buttress known as the Pinnacle. On this trip we will hike into Huntington Ravine from the Pinkham Lodge base area. This 3-mile hike varies greatly in difficulty along the route, beginning easily along the Tuckerman Ravine Trail and increasing in difficulty closer to the headwall. Interesting plants will be seen along the entire route, but the crown jewels of this trip are located at the base of Pinnacle, Odell's, and Central Gullies where numerous unique alpine species area located. This is a moderately difficult hike and will likely require 7 miles of hiking to arrive at the destination, explore, and return. Sturdy footwear, binoculars, and a sense of exploration are recommended.
