The Norman Bird Sanctuary offers 235 protected acres of woodlands, wetlands, open fields and rocky ridges, all of which support a rich lichen diversity, including the maritime lichens of southeastern New England. Begin with an introduction to the most common lichen species found here, then walk through woodlands and along the Purgatory Conglomerate or "puddingstone" ridges of the Hanging Rock Trail to a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Bring a hand lens, sturdy shoes, bag lunch, water, and a camera if desired. A reading list is provided before class.
