Mount Race in southern Berkshire County is a long, open ridgeline with spectacular views to Mt. Everett, Greylock, and other Berkshire Peaks. The ridgetop community consists of pitch pine, oaks, many heaths, and unusual flora such as three-toothed cinquefoil (Potentilla tridentata), pale corydalis (Corydalis sempervirens), and sandbar cherry (Prunus pumila). The hike to the ridge along Race Brook and the scenic Race Brook Falls passes through a mature forest of mixed hardwoods and hemlock. We will look for late-blooming composites, including a rare species that occurs on the ridge. Mount Race is an excellent location for viewing fall bird migrations, and binoculars are highly recommended. Round trip is approximately six miles, and the hike is strenuous and steep in places. Participants should have strong legs, strong lungs, and a good sense of balance. Bring a bag lunch and water.
