Winner of the Society’s 2008 NH State Award, The Fells, located on
the shores of Lake Sunapee in Newbury, NH, is one of New
England's finest examples of an early 20th-century summer estate and
gardens. This year marks the centennial of the Fells first formal garden, the "Old
Garden." Designed by Clarence Hay, this Colonial Revival-styled
horticultural masterpiece presents an integrated juxtaposition of a
cultivated garden and the indigenous New Hampshire landscape. Original
plantings of Mountain Andromeda, Rosebay Rhododendron, Fringe Tree, and June
Pinks Azalea thrive under the canopy of sugar maples, white pines and red pines. Fells Landscape Director Jeff Good will present a program on the renovation project and master plan for the space, then lead a tour through the garden. After the walk, participants can enjoy the Go Wild Sculpture Show, explore alpine and perennial gardens, hike woodland paths, or take a docent-led tour of the historic Main House. Cosponsored with the Fells.
