Among forest aficionados, Mohawk Trail State Forest is known as the forest icon of Massachusetts, containing the largest acreage of old growth forests of any property in the state. Trees have been dated to between 400 and 500 years of age. This 6,500-acre state forest also has the tallest trees not only in the Commonwealth, but in all New England. Mature white pines in Mohawk reach to over 160 feet in height. Reinforcing Mohawk's aesthetic and ecological importance are its historical and cultural roles. At least a mile and a quarter still exists of the original Indian Trail. Join Robert Leverett, president and cofounder of Friends of Mohawk Trail State Forest, as he shares the ecological, scenic, historical, and cultural treasures of the region. Part of the 3-4 mile hike is over uneven terrain with some climbing. Wear sturdy footwear and bring a lunch.
