Out of the way Chatham, NH has many intriguing botanical locations, one of which is Province Pond.  Once upon a time Province Pond was likely an old beaver flowage or perhaps an emergent marsh.  It was dammed in the 20^th century and much of the surrounding lands flooded.  Recently the dam was naturally breached and water levels have dropped significantly.  This has provided the opportunity to observe re-colonization of the newly exposed shoreline by native plants.  Sphagnum mosses, sundews, ladies’ tresses orchids, and a wide diversity of sedges and shrubs are now growing in the draw down area of the pond shore.  A bald eagle was observed hunting in this pond late last year.  This botanical excursion involves a short hike up a fairly level trail and is easily accessed by all.  Bring a bag lunch and hand lens.
