Visit a spectacular site to discover a rich mesic forest, with masses of spring ephemerals, growing shoulder to shoulder with a host of ferns, such as silvery false spleenwort (Deparia acrostichoides), narrow leaved glade fern (Diplazium pycnocarpon) and rattlesnake fern (Botrychium virginianum). Canada white violet (Viola canadensis), and dutchman's-breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) grow side-by-side in niches along with Carolina spring-beauty (Claytonia caroliniana) and two-leaved bishop’s cap (Mitella diphylla.) Though short, the hike is moderately strenuous with a short hike to the summit of Pony Mountain. Bring water-resistant hiking boots, hand lens, field guides, water, and a bag lunch.
