A veritable theme park of glacial impact, Upper Mill Brook includes upland forests, a large cattail marsh, red maple swamps, shrub swamps,  shrub-scrub, two man-made ponds, a former agricultural field and of course, Mill Brook. The plant communities and post-glacial features offer a diverse botanical experience and a wonderful nature experience. Choose a late spring trip, a late summer trip, or both.   In spring we expect to see are gay wings (Polygala paucifolia) and possibly bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), as well as a variety of trees, shrubs, ferns, and club mosses. In late summer, look for monkey flower (Mimulus ringens), boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum), and cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis).Bring sturdy shoes, long pants, a bag lunch, water, and a hand lens if you have one. Paths are generally smooth with a few short but steepish slopes, and there may be a bit of fairly easy off-trail walking in forest.
