Castle in the Clouds

High in the Ossipee mountain range overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee is Castle in the Clouds, formerly known as “Lucknow”, a mountaintop estate built in 1913-1914. The property encompasses some of the best preserved and most diverse flora in New Hampshire. Explore trails ranging from about 600 to 1600 feet in elevation leading to the summit, Bald Knob. Along the way, encounter three old growth communities – semi-rich, red oak-dominated northern hardwoods; oak woodlands; and dry oak/pine forest. More than 100 rare plant stations are located on this property, including species adapted to the unique pH and seepage characteristics of the soils. Bring a bag lunch, water, and wear sturdy shoes for this moderately strenuous botanical foray.
