Province Pond
Out of the way Chatham, NH has many intriguing botanical locations, one of which is Province Pond. Once upon a time Province Pond was likely an old beaver flowage or perhaps an emergent marsh. It was dammed in the 20th century and much of the surrounding lands flooded. Recently the dam was naturally breached and water levels have dropped significantly. This has provided the opportunity to observe re-colonization of the newly exposed shoreline by native plants. Sphagnum mosses, sundews, ladies’ tresses orchids, and a wide diversity of sedges and shrubs are now growing in the draw down area of the pond shore. A bald eagle was observed hunting in this pond late last year. This botanical excursion involves a short hike up a fairly level trail and is easily accessed by all. Bring a bag lunch and hand lens.
