Flora Novae Angliae in the Field: Phelps Pond
Phelps Pond is a small body of water with a coastal plain flora; therefore, the plants have affinities to the vegetation of the mid-Atlantic United States. In normal years, when the water level declines, the exposed shoreline and pond bottom reveal a host of plants submerged earlier in the year. This site hosts a diverse assemblage of plants, including state and regionally rare species. The adjacent uplands are also of interest and will be surveyed by the students. This intermediate level class is designed for students with a basic understanding of identification and vocabulary who want to further their proficiency. Special challenges can be provided for more advanced students. Bring a copy of the new Flora Novae Angliae if possible. Expect wet ground (waders not necessary). Come prepared for the weather and bring a hand lens, bag lunch, and ample water.
