Four Seasons of Color in the Garden
While homeowners often rush to buy whatever is in flower at the garden center, it is the shape of plants, and their foliage, bark, and berry that carry the garden through New England’s seasons. Successful gardens are tapestries of herbaceous plants, vines, trees, and shrubs woven together by the color, structure, and texture of their foliage. Garden enthusiast and plant connoisseur Ellen Lathi talks about using bold, colorful, and variegated foliage in her four-season Needham, MA garden—a favorite stop on local garden tours—where flowers are accent rather than main course.
