2008  Family Calendar Selections of New England Wild Flower Society

 

FRAMINGHAM, MA ▬ New England Wild Flower Society announces the 2008 Calendar including the return of David Rogers’ BIG BUGS exhibit and web-of-life extravaganza July 12-October 31, 2008 to Garden in the Woods in Framingham, MA.  Join us for an exciting roster of family programs, and events throughout the year, and festivals during the exhibit, all supporting the Society’s efforts to protect New England’s native plants and their habitats-our natural heritage. All programs are fee-based unless otherwise noted. Please also note changes in Garden in the Woods hours and fee schedule:  The trails and nursery are open 9-7 from April 15 through September 1, and 9-5 September 2 - October 31, 2008. WEEKDAY tours daily at 10:00 a.m.; WEEKEND tours at 2:00 pm, no reservations needed. Admission: $8 adults; $6 senior (65+) and students with ID; $4 youths 3-18; Children under three and members FREE. Informal tours included with admission, no reservations required.  Reserve group and cart tours with Bonnie Drexler at bdrexler@newenglandWILD.org.  The Society’s Nasami Farm Nursery & Sanctuary in Whately, MA is open 10-5 Thursday-Sunday from April 17-June 8, 2008, reopening for fall September 4 through Sunday October 5, 2008. Nasami Farm Sanctuary is closed during the construction of the Native Plant Center. Aug 2-3      BIG BUGS BEE WEEKEND Meet beekeepers and try honey.

Aug 5-8      Cattail Nature Kids program for ages 7-9. Do nature crafts and dip for pond life.

Aug 5-8      Cattail Nature Kids program for ages 10-11. Explore insect habitats, use microscopes.

Aug 7-8      Basic Wetland Identification and Delineation Foundation in wetland identification, field work.

Aug 8          WILD NIGHTS with WICN 90.5 FM. Bill Staines in concert, Woodland Stage 6 p.m. TIX $20/17 includes exhibit; picnics available. Advance tickets WICN.org or 508-752-0700.

Aug 9-10    BIG BUGS ANT WEEKEND Meet Ant Mini. Make some ant-ennae and fingerprint "ant art". Bring your Aunt.

Aug 11       ANIMAL AMBASSADORS Live animal show with Rain Forest Reptile Show at 10 a.m. Pay at the door.

Aug 16-17  BIG BUGS DAMSELFLY WEEKEND Learn about their watery pasts and favorite foods.

Aug 20       Insect Safari - Kids Grades 2-5. Catch a variety of insects and make a mini-field guide.

Aug 23-24  BIG BUGS BUTTERFLY FESTIVAL Celebrate these "flying flowers" with butterfly walks, programs and demos on butterfly gardening.

Sept 4        FALL OPENING DAY at Nasami Farm, Whately, MA.

Sept 6-7    BIG BUGS MANTIS WEEKEND Learn about those big eyes and camouflage.

Sept 7        Ferns of East Mountain, West Springfield, MA – Hike and seek fern species.

Sept 13-14 BIG BUGS DADDY LONGLEGS WEEKEND Make a longlegs sculpture. Bring your dad.

Sept 14     Cape Cod Treasures, Brewster, MA – Explore coastal ponds and shores.

Sept 20     Night Flashers Night Hike for children with adult companions. Fireflies, moths, and more.

Sept 20-21 BIG BUGS MONARCH MIGRATION WEEKEND Celebrate the Monarch's beauty and endurance.

Sept 21     Southern New Hampshire Astereaceae, Auburn, NH, Observe and identify asters and more.  

Sept 25     Bug Eaters of the Bog - Kids Grades K-2. Meet insect eating plants at the Garden.    

Sept 26     Intermediate Wetland Delineation Workshop Lecture and field work.

Sept 27-28  BIG BUGS GRASSHOPPER WEEKEND Celebrate our jumping favorites.

Oct 4-5      BIG BUGS ASSASSIN BUG WEEKEND Meet the "true" bug of the show. 

Oct 5          BIG BUGS STUDENT ART SHOW Drawings and paintings by students in grades K-12.

Oct 18-19  BIG BUGS SPIDER WEEKEND Make your own spider and web. Enjoy an “unscary” Halloween.

Oct 25-26 BYE BYE BUGS WEEKEND Vote for your favorite bug, leave a goodbye card.

Oct 31       BIG BUGS FINAL DAY

Nov 1         EXTENDING THE GARDEN IN TIME AND SPACE, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel & Conference Center. A new symposium for gardeners, horticulturists, and environmentalists, co-sponsored by New England Wild Flower Society, Arnold Arboretum, and Wellesley College Friends of Horticulture. Four expert speakers; Virginia Small, John Greenlee, Stephanie Cohen, and Nancy Rose. An author book signing will follow the talks.
